Self Care Clinic, Whanganui
Diploma in Naturopathy (Level 6)
Naturopathic College of New Zealand
A teenage passion for holistic health evolved into lifetime of learning and a rewarding career as a naturopath for Sandra Brunner.
Sandra tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m originally from Switzerland and have been interested in natural health ever since I was a teenager. I went to yoga, did reflexology, and completed lots of short courses in all areas of self-development, herbs, and other natural therapies. Back in Switzerland I was working as a commercial clerk in a Chinese health centre. Moving to Whanganui, New Zealand was a new beginning for me – and a great opportunity to finally turn my passion into my work.
How did NCNZ help you make that transition?
I enrolled at NCNZ because it was affordable, and I could work at the same time as I studied. I began practicing massage and reflexology right from the start, as I’d already studied that in Switzerland. I initially enrolled for full time study, but quickly changed to part time. Not only was I juggling work and study, but English is not my native language, so I found correspondence quite challenging. Part time study combined with part time work was a much more realistic balance, and I really enjoyed putting all the things I was learning at college into practice straight away at the clinic. There were lots of topics that interested me, and I quickly realised that this was just the beginning, and there was so much more to explore. NCNZ offers practical training and gave me a good basic foundation to build my business on.
How are you enjoying your career in natural health?
My life is my work and I am happy with what I am doing every day! I started with one client per week and have built that up to a good client base now. I now spend three or four days a week at the Self Care Clinic doing consultations and body work, and two days a week I work as a shop assistant and practitioner at our local Health2000. It’s a great combination.
The Self Care Clinic is run by myself and two other practitioners. We are all passionate about natural therapies and love supporting clients on their journey to health and wellness. I enjoy the combination of body work, energy work, consulting and using homeobotanicals and Bach flowers to help with emotional balance. We have counsellors and hypnotherapists in the clinic and we all work together to get the best possible outcome for the client. It’s great! My passion is to motivate people to help themselves and recognise the different aspects of healing as part of the journey. I’m well booked and it’s going well. I love continuously to improve and educate myself and enjoy a never ending exploring and learning journey. Every day is different, and you get to use all your skills to really make a difference, and support people on their healing journey.
Where to next?
I really like where I am at right now. There is ongoing education and deepening the knowledge in certain areas such as the endocrine system – and maybe one day looking at cancer treatment, and more importantly, prevention. I’m doing some workshops and am keen to look into doing more group work. My dream would be to own my own health shop one day to touch as many people as possible.
